It’s not lost on me that some people aren’t huge fans of wines because of the acidity and the dry tastes; That is what makes people lean towards the sweeter lesser quality options. It’s also not lost on me that price point matters. As mentioned in previous posts, I’m on a mission to find a decent bottle of wine that’s available to the masses and doesn’t break the bank.
This Sweet Shiraz from Jam Jar helped me to transistion to red wines in my early wine drinking days. Shiraz is a dessert wine, so it’s sweeter than most and not as dry and bitter. It’s also available at local grocery stores so it was easy to grab and go. I now only drink Shiraz after dinner, as a dessert, but if you are looking to transition, as well. I hope you try this variety.
Producer: Jam Jar
Jam Jar produces a variety of wines that lean on the sweeter side. You can find Jam Jar at your nearest grocery store, gas station or spirits store (ie., HEB, Safeway, Chevron, World Market, Total Wine).
Variety: Shiraz
Shiraz is a still wine named after the Syrah grape in France and Shiraz in Australia.
Region: South Africa’s Western Cape
Year: 2022
Price: $8.99
Jam Jar Wines range from $7-$15
ABV: 12.9%
Look/Color: Red
Smell/Nose: Black Pepper, Blackberry, Blueberry, Dark Chocolate
This Shiraz is juicy and jammy.
Taste/Palate: Semi Sweetness, Medium alcohol, Full body, Medium acid, Medium tannin, Semi Dry
Serve: Room Temperature (59-64 degrees Fahrenheit)
Pairing: REMINDER: Food effects wine! The taste of your food can alter the taste of the wine you choose. This Shiraz is dry, medium acid, and sweet so you want to pair it with food that is acidic. This type of food will enhance the fruity flavors of the wine if you are looking for a sweeter wine.
Food Options: To provide balance, pair with Blue cheese, Cheddar cheese, Grilled or Roast Beef, Curry, or Barbecue. To compliment the sweetness, then pair with desserts with chocolate or berries.
Shiraz is a great after dinner wine and can honestly be paired with a number of dishes. I recommend chilling this bottle slightly (pop in the fridge about 15 minutes before serving). If you try this wine, let me know!
