One thing for certain and two things for sure, Black women are going to put our hair in braids when the summer hits. Growing up, my mom would put my hair in some braided protective style when school ended for summer break. As an adult, I’ve continued the tradition.
Braids can be a great way to protect your hair from the elements, give it a break from daily manipulation, and can cut down your time when getting ready to go out. Although your real hair doesn’t require daily care and styling, your scalp does.
I try not to do too much with my protective styles, just as I don’t try to do too much with my real hair. Below are a few tips I use when caring for my braids.
- Spray and moisturize scalp with rose water. I purchased this rose water hydrating mist that was created for locs, when I wore my hair in faux locs. It’s refreshing and I also make sure to spray a little on the braids to wet my actual hair. Frequency: Every other day
- Oil scalp with your preferred hair oil. I purchase hair oil from my hair stylist, but I have used this hair oil and this hair oil in the past. Refrain from over applying to avoid build up.
Frequency: Every 3-5 days - Shampoo your scalp. The best way to shampoo your scalp while your hair is in braids is with an applicator bottle like this one. The applicator allows you to control the shampoo and apply it directly to the scalp. I like to add a small amount of water to the shampoo. It eliminates the need to wet your scalp prior to shampooing. We all know that wet braids can be heavy so try to avoid saturating your entire head. Frequency: Every 2 weeks.
Note: Make sure your hair and scalp are fully dry to avoid any chances of mold or mildew. - Spray your hair with leave in conditioner. I use this leave in because it’s not heavy and it smells pretty good! Frequency: Weekly and after every shampoo
- Massage your scalp as often as you remember. You want to keep the bird circulating.
Please keep in mind that these are tips that I use and are not from a professional. Always do what works best for you, your hair, and your scalp. Have fun with your summer hair. The beauty of Black hair is the privilege to style our hair in a multitude of ways. I’m a firm believer that hair is an accesory so style it for you and noone else.
Happy Summer friends!
