As a child and young adult, I loved reading! I quickly realized that reading was a tool to sharpen my imagination. Not only did reading allow me to escape my reality, it also pushed me to want to write my own short stories which has been stirred back up in me as a full adult.
The books I’ve recommended below range from children to young adult ages and also fall into the same categories as my previous recs; fiction, thriller, anti racism, romance, and banned.

Fiction: Bros by Carole Boston Weatherford, Reggie Brown
Thriller: This is My America by Kim Johnson
Anti Racism: Stamped (For Kids) by Jason Reynolds, Ibram X Kendi, Sonja Cherry-Paul
Romance: Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola
Banned: I’m A Pretty Little Black Girl by Betty K. Bynum
EyeSeeMe African American Children’s Bookstore is located in St. Louis Missouri and is “the only children’s bookstore devoted exclusively to promoting positive African American Images and African American History while advocating for Academic Excellence.” I loved browsing through their website! It felt like I was a kid again. If you are unable to visit in person, then please check out their website.
Let me know if you plan on purchasing any of these recs for your kids.
Happy Reading!
